I read "Playing with Matches" on a road trip, and it made the car ride zip right by. The protagonist, Sasha, had my support the whole way through. Even when she made mistakes, I empathized and understood her reasoning. Hipster writer Adam is swoon-worthy, and I definitely was crushing on him throughout the read. This book gives an inside look into matchmaking, and the reader and Sasha simultaneously discover together what exactly goes into that. I gasped, cheered, and laughed while reading "Playing with Matches" and can't stop telling people to pick it up for themselves. So, go read it!
Loved this book! The perfect beach read - I couldn’t put it down! As a 20-something in NYC I immediately connected with Sasha and Caroline and their modern dating struggles. It felt as if I was listening to my friends when they share their Tinder date stories with me. I hope there’s another book; can’t wait to see what’s next for Sasha!
Let me start off by saying I haven't bought a new novel in years. Something drew me to this one, I and ordered it as soon as I found out about it. When I do try to read, I usually only get through a chapter at most before my short attention span lets me down. I was sure that would be the case when I started reading this book during my lunch break on a weekday. Before I knew it, I was so engrossed in the narrative that I took the rest of the day off to finish reading (that's how invested I was in the story). This book reminded me of what it felt like to be in my early 20's in New York, young, confused, and struggling to figure everything out. I don't want to spoil anything about the story; pick it up for yourself! This is the perfect summer reading book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hannah Orenstein nailed her debut novel and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.
Reading this as a girl fresh out of college, with a journalism degree, this book is SO relatable! If you want a page turner, juicy read, this book is for you. I can't even express how much I love this book. I cried, gasped, and gleamed with Sasha, the main character, as if she was my best friend! I so desperately wish she was real so I could keep up with her story! I picked up this novel on a Saturday morning and couldn't put it down. Not only does "Playing With Matches" offer a rare inside glimpse into the world of twenty-first century matchmaking (they use Tinder, who knew?), but Hannah also gives an incredibly accurate portrayal of how confusing and overwhelming those recent grad years are like for so many people, especially young folks moving to big cities in the hopes of "making it." I only left college a few years ago, and I've already recommended this book to numerous newly minted grads.
This book has the young girl coming into her own kind of pace and feel of a "Devil Wears Prada" and "When Life Hands You Lemons Wear Lululemons." It's just more clumsy and amateurish. On one hand, it's light entertainment for a day when that's all you want in a book. On the other, I was quickly tired of reading about this girl "slurping" her drinks and her food and being so young that she couldn't possibly understand something. Hired because she's young, dumped because she's young, unable to pick wine or give advice or dress acceptably because... you can guess. There were also so many things that didn't add up. In what world does making minimum wage trolling online as a matchmaker make one the object of jealousy and admiration? As the story culminates, the writer couldn't come up with an ending. The last page feels like someone started a story and then lost their train of thought and said "oh, never mind."

When I read that inner thought of Sasha’s early on in the book, I knew she was going to be a character I liked. Sasha is a girl who pretty much, kind of, sort of has her life together for the most part, but is also winging it as she goes along on certain aspects (a very relatable trait). She’s 22, so some of what she had going on wasn’t applicable for me at 30. But, that point aside, self discovery can happen at any age; concepts like learning to be comfortable in your own skin and going after your dreams are universal in their reach.

For me, the book really picked up once Jonathan committed his act of “betrayal.” I put quotes because that’s how it’s described in the synopsis and I don’t want to give any spoilers. Up until that point I felt like I was just waiting for the shoe to drop until Jonathan did his douche move.

I’m assuming it’s the character’s age that was the driving force for the way the book ended (the idea that’s she young and learning through tough experiences). For me, the ending felt thrown together. A quick little roller coaster of emotions. I felt like I did when I watched that movie Little Black Book with Brittany Murphy. One of those things where it’s like, wow that’s really messed up, but I guess here’s the silver lining/life lesson? I understand the premise and the reasoning, but the execution of the ending still felt slap shot to me.
