The premise of this novel was marvelous.,,fascinating. The mystery kept me guessing and whenever I thought I'd reached the aha! moment, the author threw me a curve. So I really liked the mystery in this story. The 'romance' didn't quite get there for me. There was plenty of sex, but I just wasn't able to feel a deep connection between Emma and Restell. It seemed on the superficial side to me.After her abduction and the abuse she suffered, Emma's fear was understandable and was depicted well by the author. The same was true of Restell's gentle understanding. So, what was my problem?
When I began reading, I felt as if I were reading the bare-bones script of a play. The way the dialogue was written allowed for little or no expression of emotion within it. The dialogue was then followed by a narrative explaining the emotions of the characters speaking in that preceding dialogue. By then, I'd forgotten the dialogue and had to backpedal. And sometimes I had to stop and analyze to figure out which character was speaking. All this back-and-forth made it impossible for me to truly engage with the characters; to really *feel* the story. I felt like a bystander. I've never before read a novel requiring me to re-read passages on virtually every page.
This should have been a splendid book for me. The mystery was outstanding There were elements of humor. The opportunity for a sweet romance was there. But it was just too hard; too much work.
5 stars for excellent mystery
-3 stars for prose that made me work for it

Excellent! Horrible title and cover for this book - not indicative of the depth of the story, characters, dialogue, etc. If you are put off by the title, ignore it and read it. This is a story of a woman who is kidnapped, beaten, and then escapes her unknown assailants. She suffers from PTSD and yet finds the courage to try to reclaim her life from the fear that is incapcitating her. She hires a man she hears can offer her protection and help her discover what happened to her. It's delicately and cleverly written and heartbreaking at times. Yummy, roguish, smart, and clever hero, and a heartbreakingly sympathetic vulnerable heroine, with grit, courage, and wit. Really a very, very good read. (As enjoyable a second time around!)
I think this is my favorite book by this author. Restell could be my hero any day. It was just magic between the H &h.
A lot of strong characters in this story. unpredictable plot.Jo nailed this one!
Emma was never raped, but she might as well be a rape victim. She was beaten so brutally that weeks later she still carries the bruises. She is afraid to leave the house. She is afraid of everything! But she doses herself with laudenum and ventures out to hire an investigator to help solve the mystery of her abduction, and protect her and her cousin from further harm.
Restell is impressed by Emma's dignity and courage up until she has a little psychological melt-down in his library. Then he doesn't know what to do. He is a man who rarely feels inadequate to handle a situation, but Emma's trauma confounds him. I think that is where his fascination with her begins.
Restell is a good hero. He doesn't dither around much. He knows a good thing when he sees it and within weeks he proposes marriage. And Emma is a sensible heroine. She doesn't allow her fears to take over her life, and over time she begins to trust and confide in her handsome husband. It is all very satisfactory.
So the characters are good, and the mystery is pretty good too. Even though there were plenty of hints, the full story didn't become clear until right at the end. So I would say it is well done.
If you are in the mood for a Regency mystery romance, then this book is a good choice.
The mystery was intriguing and had lots of promise. Unfortunately, the verbosity of the characters drove me nuts. They verbally meandered in almost every conversation, like the point had to be gently added. We can't speak in private here so lets ride in the park and talk about a bunch of idiotic stuff before spending a few minutes on the private subject matter. Emma's fear factor seemed justified, though she seemed recover from these episodes in a strange way. Like when she bit Restel's hand. I'm losing faith in Ms. Goodman's writing. I quit reading at about 40% when I still didn't feel a connection between our h/h.
A different kind of romance. The plot is unusual, the writing is spare, and the dialogue between the two main characters is absolutely the finest I've read anywhere, including best-selling romance authors who are particularly known for their dialogue. This book is equal parts romance and mystery, as well as a sensitive look at the kind of violence-induced trauma that today we'd call PTSD. My only complaint is the title, which is stereotypical in the extreme of historical romances, and fails to convey the unusual depth to this story. If the author weren't Jo Goodman I would have passed it by, and that would have been a shame.
This book ranks in my top five romances I love to read. Not your typical historical romance. Emma the heroine of our tale and she is a heroine not just an h is attacked outside a millner's shop while running a discreet errand for her cousin. The attack is violent and she is severely injured. She seeks out our Hero, Mr. Gardner to help her discover who her attackers are and if she or her cousin was the intended target. The dialogue between the two will keep you on your toes and demand your attention. I don't mind telling you I had to re read several pages just to keep up. As the investigation progresses secrets will be revealed and while you may think you have it figured out the details that come will surprise you. Emma and Restell's characters were written so beautifully. If you want a change of pace from your typical "fluff historical", a book that demands your attention, this is it. The sex is not the focus of this book and to be honest it would have distracted from the intensity of the story. However there is sexual congress in the story and a I may never view a hairbrush quite the same))
and she has been attacked and cannot remember
