This is the article in which Maslow first presented his hierarchy of needs. It was first printed in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation". Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow described various needs and used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization, and Self-Transcendence" to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through. Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.

This paper is a highly intellectual and theoretical writing on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I had to re-read certain parts, highlight, and take time to make practical associations so that I felt I understood. However, it is precisely that challenging reading that I find stimulating. This is a foundational explanation of the theory of motivation. It explains how only upon the satisfying of the prepotent need does the importance of the next need emerge. It also offers some clarifications. For example, depending on the person’s health (psychological, physical, etc.), some needs considered basic are not in the order as presented. Because I am one who is interested in understanding motivation, I found this article helpful. If you are one who studies goal setting or is a goal setter yourself, it will give a different perspective of why you set the goals you do.Overall, this is probably not on everyone’s “must read” list, but it is a good primer on perhaps what is the most known theory of motivation - Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

A Theory of Human Motivation (Audible Audio Edition) Abraham H Maslow Troy W Hudson BN Publishing Books Reviews
Everyone should read this essay by Maslow in order to further develop an understanding of one's self and his or her surroundings. By being aware of determinants or motivators, you will be better equipped to deal with underlying emotional issues when in self-introspection.
Abraham Maslow has done extensive research expanding beyond the realm of Freudian psychology. Maslow touches on the science of motivation in healthy humans; and applies his theories in later writings. I suggest this book to everyone!
Very insightful and informative. No wonder the theory is being taught to college and grad students. Hopefully some of it stays with more people. That may increase awareness and, subsequently, quality of life. Thank you.
As highlighted by many this is a "paper", not a book and I valued it as such.
I found it to be an adequate and informative springboard from whence to get ideas for further in depth study and readings.
As far as I am concerned, it has achieved it's purpose.
IF YOU HAVENT READ THIS THEORY BY MASLOW THEN YOU ARE MISSING OUT!
LIKE LITERALLY THIS THEORY IS AMAZING
I COMPLETELY BASE MY LIFE AND DECISIONS AROUND HIS WRITING!
This brief 1943 Abraham Maslow monograph is reprinted here and is well worth reading. It is not to be considered a "cheat-sheet" to the considerable work of the psychologist, but it does introduce his "hierarchy of needs" from which so many other fundamental concepts are derived. This makes it a fine and cost-effective place to begin. This version was produced as a facsimile and does not use OCR technology.
It's short, sweet and to the point. It's 15 pages long, but filled with some valuable ideas. I knew some background on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, but it was good to read the original publication. The ideas have definitely found their way into my worldview.
I'd recommend this to anyone in search of a higher understanding of himself or herself or others.
